Mechanism for ultrafast electric-field driven skyrmion nucleation

We show how a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction can be generated in an ultrathin metal film from the induced internal electric field created by ultrashort electromagnetic pulse. This does not require structural inversion-symmetry breaking, and its amplitude tuned depending on of field. perform first-principles calculations to estimate strength field-induced magnetoelectric coupling for ferromagnetic Fe, Co, Ni, antiferromagnetic Mn, as well FePt alloys. Last, using atomistic simulations, we demonstrate isolated skyrmion coherently nucleated collinear background pulse 100-fs timescale.
